Most data sets fail to account for trans and non-binary individuals, often leading to inaccurate and harmful representations. This problem stems from asking the wrong questions and not providing inclusive answers—like forms that only offer binary gender options—forcing many to lie or be excluded.

Beyond Binary Code, a customisable code snippet that any business can add to their website to make forms gender-inclusive. Developed in collaboration with trans and non-binary communities as well as mental health organisations, the experience consists of:

• Code Builder Tool: Assists businesses in determining the necessity of collecting gender data and customises the code to fit their specific needs.

• Downloadable HTML Code: Instantly updates forms to include inclusive gender options, improving data accuracy and representation.

• Business Resources: Provides support materials for businesses, including guidance on implementation, data privacy obligations, and understanding the broader impact of inclusive gender data.

• Community-Led Stories: Features non-binary individuals who share their experiences and advice, promoting the importance of inclusive data collection.

Impacts: Over 200 downloads of the code in the first few weeks. 36 major businesses implemented the code. 3 notable companies being New Zealand’s largest digital news website, a leading online event company plus discussions with Salesforce on implementing the recommendations in their own solutions from the get go.
